POPULAR QUESTIONS
In respect to some construction questions frequently asked, -
I used the relays with removable dust covers and cut the pins and also cut the N/C contact with cutters. The type I used is a 60-1115 relay from Rapid electronics. The relay type is part no. 40.52 12v made by Finder, they are also stocked by JPR Electronics, the JPR stock code is 820-060. The web sites are -

It is less satisfying but a lot less messy than following the instructions in the article. It is important to remove the N/C contact to reduce the capacitance.
Wire gauges equate to-
14swg = 2.0mm
26swg = 0.45mm
24 swg = 0.56mm
All can be ordered from MPS by e-mail, their web is www.maplin.co.uk
The toriods T1/2 and most of the other bits can be ordered from Sycom- robin@sycomcomp.co.uk
CAPACITORS
Brass shim conversion (thou' short for 1/1000 of an inch ) is -thou' to mm
1 = .0254mm
5 = 0.125mm
10=0.254mm
The brass can be found from the local engineers supplies. it is used for tooling shims and packing bearings.
The two boards are -
* Made in fibre glass with 1oz copper and roller tinned. and plated through.
* They have a solder screen resist both sides (main board is single sided).
* Holes are pre drilled to suit the components. Tolerance is =/- 0.01mm.
* The top of the board is screen printed with the component legends.
* Where the coax outers are required to be fitted to the PCB ground plane, screen resist will be absent to form a tinned pads.
* Tinned pads are supplied to bond the vswr housing screens and the DIY caps.
* L1 coil holes are pre drilled all 126 of them.
* In short they are professional PCB's of industrial quality.
PICATUNE 2009 - Paul Berkeley M0CJX
I have re-published this site to help anyone who intends to build a PicATUne Auto ATU as published in Radcom between September 2000 and January 2001. This project is (in my view) probably one of the best projects to come from Peter Rhodes and the RSGB for a long time. It has a broad appeal in that you dont have to be a top technician to build it, and of course the finished product is one of the most important additions to the Ham shack.
Shown below is some information and pictures that may help compliment the article. If you need extra information, just e-mail me. I can also supply high res. images if required.
I will happily add to this site if anyone has any handy information or tips.
All I can say is - have a go at building it! You will not be disappointed. Look out for notice board updates.
I have the following on offer to aid your construction -
